Hornady Subsonic 7.62x39mm ammo is … subsonic! This round’s 255 grain bullet is far too ponderous to break the speed of sound. If it hops out of a 20” barrel, then its muzzle velocity will be 75 fps lower than sonic! That makes these rounds the bee’s knees if you’re trying to hunt without making too much of a fuss, or you intend to defend your homestead with a suppressed firearm because you’d prefer not to deafen yourself if you can avoid it.

The Sub-X bullet isn’t just for show. This hunting/defense projectile is optimized for subsonic velocities, and features an aggressively grooved gilding metal jacket, deep hollow point nose cavity, and supple Flex Tip which compresses during impact so as to force out wider expansion. Hornady says the Sub-X exhibits reliable expansion following impact at velocities as low as 900 fps. They also say the round has a 0.365 G1 ballistic coefficient, which means the Sub-X should remain effective out to about 300 yards. Loaded in Nebraska with premium cases and low-flash powder!
