In Paul M. Barrett’s book “Glock: The Rise of America’s Gun”, he tells the story of how Gaston Glock was the first to market with a semi-automatic pistol for the newly designed .40 Smith & Wesson caliber; the Glock 22. The popularity of the Glock 22 and its adoption by so many Law Enforcement agencies in the US made the .40 S&W one of the most popular handgun calibers in history. Much to the chagrin of Smith & Wesson, they played second fiddle to Glock on the caliber they designed in conjunction with Winchester.
